The Seafood Awards are held by Seafish, the authority on seafood, which aims to promote good quality and sustainable seafood across all sectors of the seafood industry. The initiative is designed to encourage enterprise, innovation and best practice throughout the industry. Entries were encouraged from processors, suppliers, restaurateurs and friers to fishermen and fishmongers across a plethora of categories.
The competitive category of Sustainable Future award attracted some exemplary entries from a range of leading companies and were judged on initiatives or methods that demonstrated a real concern for the environment and the sustainable harvesting of seafood.
Announcing M&J Seafood as the ultimate winners the judges praised M&J Seafood for tackling the challenges of responsibly sourcing seafood, which is demonstrated not only by its business actions but also through their collaborative engagement at a wider level. The judges were particularly impressed by M&J’s fundamental commitment to sustainability, demonstrated by four of their initiatives: their Cornish albacore tuna, the British Skippers Scheme, their support of MSC certified products and their commitment to champion alternative and under-utilised species.
Mike Berthet, director of fish and seafood at M&J Seafood commented “Winning the Sustainable Future award is a fantastic achievement especially in view of the exceptionally high calibre of entries the category attracted. This award acknowledges the tireless work and dedication the team at M&J puts into ensuring that we offer the most comprehensive range of sustainable fish and seafood to the foodservice sector. This award underlines our commitment to working towards delivering a viable and sustainable future for the seafood industry whilst ensuring we offer the very best quality products in a responsible way to our customers”.
